How long is a stage of the Tour de France?
The Tour de France is one of the most famous cycling races in the world and takes place every year in July. The tour extends over a little over three weeks and includes 21 stages and two rest days. The total length varies each year, but typically during the Tour de France, riders have to cover around 3,500 kilometers. In 2021, for example, the total distance was 3,383 kilometers.
Each stage in the Tour de France has a different length and difficulty. A prologue or a time trial at the beginning of the tour can only be about 10 kilometers long. Individual or team time trials usually have a distance between 25 and 50 kilometers.
Flat and hilly stages can be between 150 and 250 kilometers long, while very demanding mountain stages are usually around 120 to 200 kilometers. In addition to maintaining a high speed, riders must overcome mountains and hills, making the Tour de France one of the most demanding races in the world.
