Nanotechnologie im Triathlon

Nanotechnology in triathlon

The constant urge to discover new things is deeply anchored in our DNA. It is passion, curiosity, and the desire to get the best out of everything that drives us every day. That makes us constantly search for new solutions and innovative technologies and constantly broaden our horizons.

This is the basis for products such as our Verge triathlon suit. The competition one-piece suit with which Jan Frodeno managed to defy the extreme conditions of Hawaii in 2019, crown himself Ironman World Champion for the third time, and set a new course record, as well. This suit uses the innovative material graphene, which creates completely new possibilities for temperature regulation in endurance sports.

Together towards the future

The historic moment in Hawaii was preceded by almost one and a half years of research and development. For this, we teamed up with Directa Plus. The Italian company has been researching nanotechnology for almost 15 years and specializes in the use of graphene, a two-dimensional carbon and high-tech material, in a wide variety of areas and industries. Directa Plus places particular emphasis on ecologically sustainable production processes and is committed to a strict code of ethics.

A natural all-rounder

Graphene is extracted from the natural material graphite, commonly known from pencil leads. At Directa Plus, it is manufactured using a special water-based process, at high temperatures and high pressure  without chemicals or solvents. This complex process produces the certified Graphene Plus, which, in addition to high thermal conductivity, has antibacterial and antiviral properties, offers UV protection, and is at the same time extremely tear-resistant, flexible and ultra-light.

Body and material in interaction

Directa Plus uses this exceptional combination of properties for its patented G+ Planar Thermal Circuit® technology. The Graphene Plus is printed onto the inside of garments using a special process. The thermal conductivity of the graphene causes an active interaction between the body and the textile fabric when the clothing is worn. As the body temperature rises, the G+ Planar Thermal Circuit® begins to conduct the heat generated by the body from the warmer to the colder areas, balancing the excess heat and reducing the hot spot effect.

Pushing boundaries in triathlon

Based on the G+ Planar Thermal Circuit® technology from Directa Plus, we have developed the Graphene Gridflow Technology (G.G.T.), which is used in the Verge triathlon suit. The colorless graphene is printed on a lining using a special procedure, which is then processed into the actual material. The graphene print then functions as a thermal circuit along which heat energy moves.

We use the properties of Graphene Plus in the Verge suit to prevent overheating during competition in extreme conditions. Combined with special inner pockets (our Advanced Compartment System) where wet sponges or ice can be stored, the G+ Planar Thermal Circuit® print inside the suit directs cold to selected areas of the body. This way, targeted and rapid temperature regulation is achieved.

With the Verge suit, we have created a revolutionary product in terms of temperature management, which we have been able to improve continuously since Jan won the Ironman World Championship title in 2019. With the Aura Graphene Ultralight Race Cap, we have now developed a second product in which graphene is used for temperature regulation. And we are sure that this is still not the end: We remain curious and would like to keep on using Graphene Plus in the future when developing further innovative concepts and solutions.
